I think today those little morel spores got a little nudge, just enough to say, hey, you've been sleeping for a really long like two years' time and its time to start winding those dreams down and start thinking about getting ready to consider maybe stretching out and preparing to sprout....

...hopeful.

Perhaps after this rain today in Raleigh we might be in season?

I'll be out today on the lookout!  Going to check around the NC state centennial campus/Lake Raleigh area.  Seems to have all the qualifications for them to pop up!

Collin,

A lot of pines over in that area, in my experience if an area is all pines, one of two things...just opinions.... the area has been logged in the past and replanted with the pines = not good for morels. The pine needles make the soil very acidic in that area = not good for morels. But there should be other areas over there that might produce.

just got back from a quick lunch break hunt and saw 3 very small blacks, probably popped up last night, not up more than 2 days for sure. Temps look good the rest of this week, if we can just get a little moisture it should be good the end of this week and all of next. Ground moisture was excellent though, so as long as it doesn't get too hot, should be ok, but a fresh rain always helps.

Thanks for the tips Dave,

I was going to stay away from the pine area, you are right, that is planted and is probobly to acidic.  The back area of Lake Raleigh might have good conditions as it seems to be older and more hardwoods.  I'm still going out today and will report back.  -Collin

Well, I haven't seen any. (Nothin'new there. Smiley)
Checked behind the soccer park Tuesday and didn't see anything
and another proven spot today and didn't see anything.
A friend has a little spot in his backyard that he usually gets a dozen or two from each year
and he told me he saw his first one yesterday.
The next week ought to be about right for looking.

I found a small area near my home that is a grove of hardwoods.  Are ferns a good sign for morel hunting?  Or do I want a drier location?  I live in the Wake Forest area to narrow it down.
