This rock has a little bit of everything

I found this rock by caving off the edges  of a big rootball hole a couple weeks ago. It rained last night and washed some of the dirt off the rocks I've been piling up. It stood out because of a glitter on it like gold. I know my luck so, it can't be gold but it looks like there is a Quartz crystal in it and, some of the rust color minerals seem to have a growth pattern like tree branches or a scallop shell.

Yeah gold's everywhere around here. I don't even bother with it anymore. It's heavy stuff, too. Got tired of lugging all those bags out of the woods. Tongue
But, I believe the golden colored platy animal you are seeing in that piece of quartz is Mica. Mica is a good sign. Other minerals, and crystals, like to grow in Mica. Good to take a close look when you see Mica. And you may want to start soaking some of your rocks in some Iron Out also. It will clean the stains up. It's up to about $20 a bottle, a powder you mix with water found at Lowes or Home Depot.
Once it cools off, a lot, I see a lot of digging in your future.  Smiley

Yep, I hear you JoeM.  Once I realized how heavy the shiny yellow stuff was, I just left it in the forest,  Grin
Seriously, this could actually indicate gold nearby? I'm not lucky enough to actually find a piece of gold, lol. If I plug in a polarized lamp without looking at the prongs, I will get it wrong 9 out of 10 times, lol. Thank you for the info. I am definitely going to start looking. I would like to find just 1 piece at least. I'm going to read up on the "Iron Out". I've read that diluted hydrochloric acid works but I have never tried it.

Hydrochloric will dissolve some minerals and Oxalic will dull some. Iron Out is the simplest, easiest, and best. 1 cup to a gallon of water to start. You'll figure out your own ratios as you experiment with it.
Use a 5-gallon bucket with a top and let it sit for 24-48 hours to start. Then soak in rinse water for 24 hours. Just hold your breath and watch out for the fumes especially when first mixing powder into the water. It'll bubble for a little while before settling down.

Thank you JoeM!!
I had never heard of Iron Out. It will do double duty at my house.  I have hard well water and haven't found anything that cleans the stains very well.

The "scallop shell" pattern seen most easily in your last two pictures looks like barite to me.

Thank you Scott LaBorde!!!
My "Iron Out" was delivered Tuesday, (and I got the book JoeM, thank you), and I started this rock soaking. The pics below are the result. After rinsing and examining it, I wish I would have had a way to catch the debris I emptied with the solution. No telling what was in it.

Looks like a whole different animal now doesn't it! Smiley
Now you can get a better look at it!
Screening is a good idea, specially if you know there's some mineral worth collecting in the material. I don't think you're missing too much. We'd probably be able to see it in the rough, but it's always good to take a look and see.
Glad you got Formative Cultures. You will get to know that book real well. Wink

Yep JoeM, it looks like a totally different rock!!! I have already started another bucket of rocks soaking, lol. I have a lot of rock that looks like limestone to be cleaned but, I dont know if they will melt so I will test a small piece. Now I have to decide if I want to crush this rock, (I also got a gold pan in my delivery), or put it in a pile. The "Formative Cultures" book is definitely a go to. The author sets so much of the record straight.
