Scott,

Wake County never ceases to amaze me with its array of minerals. It is my opinion that its only a matter of time that gem beryl (emerald?) will turn up there. The rutile, smokies, ankerite, dolomites, etc. that your finding remind me of Hiddenite. Many years ago, I was at the Fairgrounds flea market, there use to be a mineral dealer there in one of the buildings. Anyway, a young man came in with a cigar box full of killer clove brown brookite xls on quartz and mica. Some were in blades to 1/2" clustered on the matrix! The guy said that they were from a construction site in Cary but that's all he'd say. I tried my best to buy one from him but he wouldn't part with any. That's been 25 years ago or more I'd suspect. The same guy also had kyanite blades from Falls lake. Again, beautiful stuff your finding, lots of luck to you.

Excuse me for buttin' in but, Roll Eyes
just for your info,Mike, The Oaks site here in Wake that
produced smoky tessin habit quartz with rutile, siderite, and
mica was nick-named "Little Hiddenite". Smiley

And emerald has allready been recorded found in Wake Co.
Definitely at an old mica mine off Hwy 98 just west of Wake Forest. And "reported" from a couple other localities.
Morganite also has been said to have been found in the Hwy 98 area.
I have been looking for my first Wake Co beryl for about 15
years now, but cannot remember ever having seen one in
any collection. It has been frustrating. Scott just pretty
much roles his eyes when I say I want to go "beryl" hunting
and resigns himself to looking at alot of old saprolitic pegmatite. Grin

It would be GREAT! if it was brookite on those crystals you
saw from Cary, but I just have to wonder if it wasn't
actually the goethite/limonite psuedos of siderite we find
most of the time? Undecided

Joe

I've been awake less than five minutes and i'm already learning something new, i had no idea about the similarities between Wake co and Hiddenite until yall pointed them out.

Joe,

The brookites I saw were definitely brookite. They were transparent clove brown, wafer xls that resembled the classic ones coming from Pakistan. I have no doubt that they were brookite. I only wish that were for sale as i would have gotten as many as i could have afforded. As far as beryl from Wake County, I actually saw a beryl crystal section in an old collection many years ago label "Purnell area". It was about 4" across, pale opaque green with a decided orange hue to it, possibly iron content? Unusual in color. I was given the locality, went there and was denied access because it was behind a new (at that time) subdivision along a creek. It was behind a house that sat at the end of a cul-de-sack. At that time which was at least 20 years ago, the owner had planted grass and didn't want people tromping upon it to get to the creek. But when asked about it, he knew what I was talking about and said that he'd seen beryl crystals in the creek. So I left, figured that was the end of that. Anyway....hope you find it!

Joe,

One more thing since you live closer to it than I do, also many years ago, I was traveling in the Raven Rock area of Harnett County looking around and stumbled across a road cut. Upon inspection, I found a narrow mica and quartz vein that rewarded me with a dozen or so small but very clear smokies. They were in a small pocket and digging further produced no more, however, I only went back on more time and found that someone had dug even deeper in the spot, probably hit more. I've not been back since. If I went back, I might could find it again but its been many years and God knows what development or changes have occurred? The road was west of Kipling, just north of Raven Rock and ran parallel with the Cape Fear river. Food for thought!

Thanks rockytop Smiley,
I've been to that area many times back when I was mostly
huntin' heads. It is unusual to think about finding crystals
that far east, but Raven Rock is an interesting geological area.
And I have found quartz veins with ugly short fat up to one
inch crystals at a quarry on the river just south of there.
Glad to have something else to check out when next down
that way.

Joe

We stopped by this spot the other day since we were in the
proverbial neighborhood and I found this one crystal sitting
next to where a small fissure had been previously dug out.
Somebody must've set it there and overlooked it when cleaning up.
Thank you. Wink
It's not a show-stopper but it has a nice point and good
smoky color and clarity toward the point, and it has a small
patch of the lovely red rutile.

I was back out at this spot recently and found a piece of
quartz with a couple of faces and a black streak running through it.
I couldn't tell what the "black" was so I decided to take it home and grind it down
to get a better look.
It wasn't really a surprise for this area to see that the black was reticulated rutile.
Or you can call it Sagenite if you want.
Looks like two reticulated planes/ layers of reticulated rutile to me. Wink
Here's way too many pics of the piece........which.......
after these pictures I tried to grind it down further and the piece fell apart in my hands. Cry

I know this post is pretty old, but I watched "wake county digs" on You Tube and I'm obsessed!  I could not see any information about where you were able to do those digs in Wake County.  Do you recall if it was at a local fee mining place or just out there in some random place?  Though I doubt that as there are not many places in the world you can just go start digging places.

I am a huge rock and crystal enthusiast.  Not really any rocks that I do not like.  I have never been to a fee mining site but I hope to start doing that.  Unfortunately I live in MN right now and there aren't any places to do that.  Of course up the shoreline you can search for Lake Superior Agates but I live in Southern Minnesota so that is not easily accessible and it is quite a long drive.

However I do plan to move out of the state in the semi-near future so I'm making tentative plans and a mental note of all the places I want to dig stuff up and wake county is on my list now!  That looked like so much fun.

Since I've already tarnished this thread I'll add a few pics here of a recently found piece from the Cemetery
which is right up the road from The Oaks, where those earlier specimens came from.
Besides for the usual inclusions there's this little yellow blob?
