Excuse me for buttin' in but,
just for your info,Mike, The Oaks site here in Wake that
produced smoky tessin habit quartz with rutile, siderite, and
mica was nick-named "Little Hiddenite".
And emerald has allready been recorded found in Wake Co.
Definitely at an old mica mine off Hwy 98 just west of Wake Forest. And "reported" from a couple other localities.
Morganite also has been said to have been found in the Hwy 98 area.
I have been looking for my first Wake Co beryl for about 15
years now, but cannot remember ever having seen one in
any collection. It has been frustrating. Scott just pretty
much roles his eyes when I say I want to go "beryl" hunting
and resigns himself to looking at alot of old saprolitic pegmatite.
It would be GREAT! if it was brookite on those crystals you
saw from Cary, but I just have to wonder if it wasn't
actually the goethite/limonite psuedos of siderite we find
most of the time?
Joe
